Trip Itinerary:

Day 1:  Iquitos/Aqua Cruise

Meeting upon arrival in Iquitos, transfer to the main port of Iquitos where the Aqua is waiting. As you settle into your spacious room, the ship will begin the journey deep into the Amazon by way of the Yanayacu River.  There will be a meeting on the upper deck to inform about safety on board. Then the Cruise Director and the guides will give a brief orientation talk about life on board, the places you’ll go and what you will see on your Amazon journey.  Enjoy a welcome dinner as you begin to take in the river and jungle that surrounds you.  Tonight enjoy a cocktail on the upper deck under the stars while breathing the freshest air on Earth.  (LD)

Day 2: Aqua Cruise

Wake up early to enjoy the beautiful sunrise over the Amazon River. After a delicious breakfast board a comfortable motorboat to start exploring the Amazon River through the Huaysi shortcut channel and explore Tahuayo a dark water tributary of the Amazon. There you can see terns, orioles, blackbirds, black collared hawks, monkeys and sloths. Upon arrival at Lake Charo, you can try to catch some of the ferocious piranhas and other fish that are local to the Amazon. Return to the Aqua to enjoy a light lunch. After lunch, visit the Yacapana Islands, called “Islands of the Iguana” because of the large number of Iguanas that inhabit the islands. These islands are also home to the gray and pink freshwater dolphins. Continue your journey upstream toward the headwaters of the Amazon River, where the Ucayali and Maranon rivers merge. Then return to the Aqua and enjoy a pisco sour and appetizers on the upper deck while watching the sunset before dinner.  (BLD)

Day 3: Aqua Cruise

After breakfast, visit one of the local community projects where villagers are planting palm trees to obtain oil. The guide will show you the artificial nests created on the sand to protect turtle eggs. Then set off by foot into the jungle to encounter wildlife and learn about the values of medicinal plants and observe the famous Ceiba tree, the highest in the Amazon. Return to the Aqua for lunch; after lunch you will learn about the two different kinds of freshwater dolphins and a variety of primates. There are 13 species of monkeys the live in this section of the Amazon. Alligators and crocodiles are seen regularly along the banks of the river and there are over 200 species of birds.  Return to Aqua for dinner.  (BLD)

Day 4: Aqua Cruise

Sail along the Ucayali River to the Yurucuche Lake and walk through the jungle in search of giant lily pads known as Victoria Regia.  After breakfast, the cruise will sail through the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, a dense forest covering five million acres at the headwaters of the Amazon basin. You will see one of the great spectacles of the Southern Hemisphere: the birth of the Amazon River. Here, at the junction of two major tributaries, the Ucayali and the Marañon Rivers form the greatest river in the world. Your morning excursion will consist of sailing along the riverbanks that have an abundance of wildlife. Arrive at Puerto Prado, a small village where you can meet and interact with local villagers in this remote part of the world.  Learn about their culture, traditions and folklore, visit the local handicrafts market.  Return to the cruise for your last lunch on board the Aqua.  After lunch visit the Amazon Wildlife Rescue Center that specializes in the care of manatees and grey and pink river dolphins.
