Meeting upon arrival at Belize City airport, transfer to you hotel in Cayo district of Belize. Located in the western section of the country and bordering Guatemala lies a vast stretch of rainforests, ranches, and some of the country’s most remote and rugged terrain. The region is littered with Maya ruins, extensive caves and wildlife, explore the forest on foot, on horse or in a kayak, raft, or canoe. The country’s capital, Belmopan, is located here, but the real hub of the district is San Ignacio, a small town with colonial-era streets and a funky medley of restaurants and shops. Some of Cayo’s not-to-miss attractions include the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, Actun Tunichil Muknal, and the ancient Maya city of Caracol. Tonight explore the jungle with a guide night walk, listen to the sounds as the jungle comes alive with a variety of nocturnal creatures. (D)
After breakfast tour Actun Tunichil Muknal “Cave of the Stone Sepulcher” is one of the most impressive caves in Central America. Located in the heart of the Belize Rainforest, the cave was a sacred place for prehistoric Mayans who first began to use the caves entrance as early as 300AD. The cave system consists of a series of chambers and a massive Cathedral where sacrificial ceremonies once took place. Exploring this cave is like traveling back into the Maya past to witness a living museum of artifacts in their original context. The tour begins with a drive to the trailhead and then an easy trek through the jungle in the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve. Along your walk you will have the opportunity to learn about the jungle and hopefully see some of the creatures that call it home. At the entrance of the Cave you will be outfitted with the necessary equipment. Some swimming and climbing will be required for this activity. Caving will last about 3 hours after which you may also visit a nearby dry cave to see ancient inscriptions and handprints of which the origins are unknown. This is a first class caving and archaeological experience. (BLD)
After breakfast transfer to the banks of The Mopan River where we will use a hand cranked ferry system to cross the river as there is no bridge! Once across we will drive a short distance to the entrance of Xunantunich a Maya archaeology site. Tour this small and picturesque site and enjoy the beautiful views of the surrounding rainforest and temples. After lunch visit Cahal Pech also know as the “place of tricks” one of the oldest known Mayan sites that served as an home for an elite Mayan family. Continue to the banks of the Macal River to begin a guided canoe adventure down the river. This relaxing paddle is a great way to see the flora and fauna of the jungle. (BLD)
After breakfast head out to experience Belize’s caves as you float through them on an inner tube. Sit back and relax and let the slow moving river guide you through the underground world like you have never experienced before. After transfer to the airport for a short flight to San Perdro, a former fishing village but today it’s the only town on the island; the streets are made of sand and are lined with waterfront restaurants, hotels, tiki bars, and dive shops. Ambergris Caye runs parallel to the magnificent Belize Barrier Reef and is a popular destination for diving, snorkeling, sailing, fishing, kayaking, and windsurfing. Meeting upon arrival, transfer to hotel. (BL)
