Welcome to Arenal, located in the central highlands of Costa Rica! It’s home to one of the world’s most active volcanoes, as well as lush tropical forests, natural thermal hot springs, waterfalls, rivers, and every type of activity to satisfy any type of traveler. Whether you’re looking to relax in absolute tranquility or test out your white water rafting skills, Arenal has it all!
The Arenal Volcano is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful volcanoes that exists on the planet. Standing at a commanding elevation of 5,479 feet over the surrounding landscape it will be a picturesque focal point from whichever direction you gaze upon it. The first eruption was in 1968 and since then you can see it puffing white smoke and occasionally spewing rocks and lava.
If you’re looking for some heart pounding adventure, then Arenal is the place. There is so much to do here from repelling down waterfalls and ziplining high above the jungle canopy to whitewater rafting down some of the best rivers in the Americas and awesome mountain biking trails.
If a shot of adrenaline is not what you’re craving don’t worry, there’s still plenty for you to do! Horseback ride to a secluded swimming hole for a refreshing plunge, walk through the forest on a series of suspension bridges, kayak or SUP on beautiful Arenal Lake or float down a slow-moving river and behold countless birds, mammals and reptiles in their natural environment. If relaxation or pampering sounds more of what the doctor ordered, then you’re in luck. Soak away stress and tension in the natural and healing thermal hot springs or treat yourself to a day at one of the area’s world class spas.
Earlier we mentioned that the Arenal area has natural hot springs, both relaxing and adrenaline-pumping. The springs come from an underground source (much due to the nearby volcano), and the water is rich in mineral salts, calcium and magnesium to refresh and moisturize your skin as you relax in the waters. Pick your “poison” whether that means relaxing in a spring with a cool glass of wine or blasting down a waterslide into a different spring and concluding with a mud bath. The Arenal area truly has endless options for every kind of traveler, from relaxation to heart-pumping, budget to five-star accommodations! Pura Vida!
